Grain Cleaning Machine Types: How to Choose the Right One for Your Line

A practical breakdown of the five machine types used in a grain cleaning line — air-screen cleaner, destoner, gravity separator, magnetic separator and dust collector — and how to decide which ones your grain actually needs.

Most grain cleaning problems are not caused by a bad machine. They are caused by the wrong machine in the wrong place in the line, or by a machine asked to do a job it was never designed for.

This guide covers the five machine types you will find in almost every grain and seed cleaning line, what each one actually removes, and the questions that decide which combination your plant needs.

1. Air-screen cleaner — the workhorse

An air-screen cleaner removes material by size and by air resistance: dust, chaff, straw, sand and anything much bigger or much smaller than the grain. It is the first machine after the intake and it protects every machine downstream.

Removes: dust, chaff, light straw, sand, oversized and undersized material.
Does not remove: stones of the same size as the grain, damaged or shrivelled kernels of the same size and weight.

2. Destoner — removes stones by density

A destoner uses a vibrating deck and upward air to float grain and sink stones. It is essential before any machine with a close clearance, because a single stone can damage a rubber roll or a screen.

Removes: stones, glass, metal pieces, mud balls — material heavier than grain.
Does not remove: light damaged kernels, which is the job of the next machine.

3. Gravity separator — removes what weight can find

The gravity separator is the machine that decides final quality. It separates by density, so shrivelled, sprouted, mould-affected and insect-damaged kernels lift away from sound grain. For seed production this is the machine that decides germination rate.

We build two versions: a single-deck gravity separator for moderate capacities, and a double-deck gravity separator that runs a cleaning pass and a grading pass in one machine.

Removes: light, shrivelled, sprouted and damaged kernels, plus residual chaff.
Does not remove: stones (a gravity separator set for grain will not reliably reject stones — the destoner does that).

4. Magnetic separator — protection, not cleaning

A magnet removes tramp iron: nails, wire, bolts and machine wear particles. It is a safety device for your downstream equipment and for your customer, and on food and feed lines it is usually not optional.

5. Dust collector — the machine buyers forget

Every machine above moves air. Without a dust collector that air goes into the building: on the operator, on the electrics, on the neighbours. A cyclone or pulse-jet collector keeps the plant clean, reduces fire risk and — in most export markets — is what makes the difference between a plant that passes inspection and one that does not.

How to decide what your line needs

  1. Start from the contamination. Open a sample of incoming grain on a white sheet and separate by hand. Whatever you can pick out tells you which machine you need.
  2. Decide the target. Milling quality, seed quality and feed quality are three different targets, and they need different machines.
  3. Match capacity end to end. A line is only as fast as its slowest machine. Put the same throughput question to every supplier and compare the answers.
  4. Leave room for adjustment. Every material behaves differently. A machine you cannot adjust on site is a machine you will fight with.

What to send us for a proper recommendation

Material, bulk density, contamination you can see, target cleanliness, required tonnes per hour, available floor space and head height, and power supply. With those six answers we can tell you which machines you need — and, just as often, which ones you do not.

See the full machine range or send us your requirements and we will reply with a line layout suggestion.
